Bruce Davis to lead Smitherman’s campaign for Toronto mayor

Globe and Mail Update

Bruce Davis, chair of the Toronto District School Board and a veteran of local politics, is George Smitherman's new campaign manager.

The mayoral candidate announced Mr. Davis's appointment, and the addition of a deputy campaign manager -- lawyer Amanda Klein -- outside his campaign office on The Esplanade Tuesday evening.

A wrench was thrown in Mr. Smitherman's campaign late Friday evening with the departure of campaign manager Jeff Bangs. Speculation swirled over the weekend regarding the reasons behind his departure, with some saying Mr. Bangs, the father of two young children, may have underestimated the notoriously tenacious Mr. Smitherman's “24/7” schedule.

Mr. Davis said he's prepared for that blistering pace, balanced with his responsibilities as chair of a board gearing up to make dramatic changes to its properties across the city.

Toronto's political spectators should prepare themselves for a different kind of campaign, he said.

“We've gotta unleash George.”
