A Yukon New Democrat MLA has been killed in a car accident.
Fifty-three-year-old Steve Cardiff died Wednesday afternoon when the car he was in hit a truck south of Whitehorse.
Cardiff was first elected in 2002 and had represented the southern Yukon riding of Mount Lorne for two terms.
He planned to run again in the territorial election set for this fall.
The sheet metal worker also served two years on the board of the Yukon Federation of Labour and sat for nine years on the Yukon College board of governors.
In a statement, NDP Leader Liz Hansen says party members are deeply saddened by the news, and their hearts and thoughts are with Cardiff's family.
