May wants Canada to be nuclear-free zone

EDMONTON Canadian Press

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is calling on Canada to take a stronger role in global nuclear disarmament.

Ms. May, who is crossing the country by rail making whistle stops in various communities, told a news conference in Edmonton today that Ottawa needs to declare Canada a nuclear-free zone.

She says Canada also must end subsidies to the sale of nuclear reactors overseas.

Ms. May says no other party is talking about nuclear disarmament, and she wants to force the other leaders to take a stand on the issue before next month's televised leaders' debates.

She was joined by Douglas Roche, a former senator who was Canada's ambassador on disarmament to the United Nations.

Mr. Roche — a former Progressive Conservative — says the Green party has the best plan to help get rid of the 25,000 nuclear weapons that still exist throughout the world.
