Vandals hit Nova Scotia ridings

HALIFAX— Canadian Press

The campaigns of two Liberals and one Conservative in Nova Scotia have been hit by vandalism.

In the Annapolis Valley, the word “fag” was spray painted on several signs belonging to Liberal MP Scott Brison, an openly gay politician from the area.

In Halifax, rocks were tossed through the windows of two campaign offices over the weekend.

Liberal candidate Catherine Meade, the party's candidate in the hotly contested riding of Halifax, found several large stones lying in her office amidst shattered glass today.

Ms. Meade says she doesn't know who would carry out such a “senseless act.”

As well, the campaign offices of Ted Larsen, Ms. Meade's Tory rival, suffered a similar attack.

The vandalism came on the same weekend that more than two dozen Toronto homeowners with Liberal campaign signs on their front lawns had their car brake lines cut or damaged, their phone and cable lines tampered with, or graffiti sprayed on their garage doors.

Police are investigating what Carolyn Bennett, the Liberal MP for Toronto-St. Paul's, described as “anti-Liberal hatred” and follows reports of similar incidents in recent months.

Police say that some time between Friday night and Saturday morning, 14 homeowners in the St. Paul's riding had their homes and cars vandalized.

The Liberals say at least 11 other homes and cars were vandalized this weekend in the Parkdale-High Park riding where Gerard Kennedy is running.

Ms. Bennett said the vandalism is part of a troubling trend. Liberal supporters reported similar incidents in the past few months in the Toronto riding of Willowdale and in Guelph, Ont., both in the lead up to by-elections, she said.
