Voters will be casting ballots in provincial elections across the country over the coming months.Brett Beadle for The Globe and Mail

Prince Edward Island

Date: October 3

The view: Currently boasting an overwhelming majority, Liberal Premier Robert Ghiz hopes voters will continue their tradition of giving premiers a second term. Mr. Ghiz has a lead in polls, but his biggest challenger, the Progressive Conservative party, has closed the gap this year.

Northwest Territories

Date: October 3

The view: NWT voters will pick their MLAs, but the territory doesn't have political parties. As such, MLAs themselves will in the weeks afterward decide who will serve as premier in the co-operative government. Premier Floyd Roland isn't seeking another term in the legislature.

Manitoba

Date: October 4

The view: Premier Greg Selinger leads his NDP into an election for the first time, facing a strong challenge from Progressive Conservative and Official Opposition Leader Hugh McFadyen.

Ontario

Date: October 6

The view: Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty hopes to win a third majority, but he's facing a real Progressive Conservative challenge.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Date: October 11

The view: Progressive Conservative Leader Kathy Dunderdale faces her first election as party leader, hoping to extend a streak started by her predecessor, Danny Williams. It's a fixed election date. The Official Opposition Liberals on the weekend picked a new leader, Kevin Aylward, to replace Yvonne Jones, who stepped down last week to battle breast cancer.

Saskatchewan

Date: November 7

The view: Brad Wall will lead his right-leaning Saskatchewan Party to the polls holding 38 of the province's 58 seats. The province has fixed election dates, and Mr. Wall's party is on pace for an easy majority win.

Yukon

Date: Unknown

The view: A date hasn't been set, but the governing Yukon Party is required to go to the polls this fall. Premier Darrell Pasloski took over his right-leaning party in May. They currently hold a narrow majority.

British Columbia

Date: Unknown

The view: Premier Christy Clark may call a vote this fall, depending on poll numbers and this month's results of the HST referendum. Ms. Clark hasn't yet led the Liberals into an election.

Alberta

Date: Unknown

The view: Alberta's ruling Progressive Conservatives will have a new leader no later than Oct. 1. They're soaring in polls and may call a snap election, but aren't required to until early 2013.
