Danny Williams is speaking out against Bill Barry's bid for the leadership of the Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservatives.

The former premier says he can't support Barry because of the candidate's desire to privatize Nalcor Energy, health care and education.

Williams says he believes Barry, a fishery magnate based in Corner Brook, is looking for a shortcut to the premier's office.

Barry could not be reached for comment.

He is the only person to have officially declared his candidacy.

The top spot opened up late last month when former Premier Kathy Dunderdale announced her resignation amid questions about her leadership.

Dunderdale inherited the job when Williams quit politics in December, 2010.
