Prime Minister Stephen Harper has appointed the president of the Canada Border Services Agency to be his next national security adviser.
Stephen Rigby will begin the powerful job at the Privy Council Office on Nov. 15. The national security adviser channels sensitive intelligence from a host of federal security agencies, filtering it for consumption by cabinet and top bureaucrats.
Mr. Rigby, who first joined the government as a customs inspector in 1980, was the acting national security adviser in 2005.
He will be replaced at the CBSA by Luc Portelance - Mr. Rigby's No. 2 and a former executive with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
Mr. Rigby succeeds Marie-Lucie Morin, a former diplomat who is now joining the World Bank.
