Victoria-area Liberal MP Keith Martin is calling it quits in federal politics.

Mr. Martin says he won't be seeking re-election in the riding of Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca, which he has served since 1993 when he first ran as a Reform party candidate.

He ran unsuccessfully for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance party in 2000, before crossing the floor to the federal Liberals.

Mr. Martin says when he entered politics he wanted to make a difference in Canada and while that work is not complete, it's time to move on.

The former doctor says Canada's institutions need new blood and new ideas.

He also says he still supports Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and hopes he forms the next federal government.
