Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger will not face a formal request from his New Democratic Party to step down while he fights for his job.
The NDP provincial council, which is the party's governing body, voted against a motion Saturday to have Selinger resign as premier until a leadership vote at the party's annual convention March 8.
Selinger has faced a caucus revolt over his party's low polling numbers and several caucus members have called on him to quit.
The party has decided to hold a leadership contest at their convention, and Selinger will be allowed to be both premier and leadership candidate until then.
Some party members had opposed the idea, saying it gives Selinger an unfair advantage over other contenders.
No one so far has declared a run against him, but former cabinet minister Theresa Oswald is considering entering the race
