The Newfoundland and Labrador Liberals say a provincial member wants to run in the federal riding vacated by former cabinet minister Peter Penashue.

Carla Foote, a spokeswoman for the provincial Liberals, says Yvonne Jones has informed the party she intends to seek the nomination for the riding of Labrador.

Jones is the former leader of the provincial Liberals and now sits as the member for Cartwright-L'anse au Clair.

The announcement comes after Penashue resigned his seat Thursday and repaid $30,000 in "ineligible" campaign donations from the 2011 federal election.

Penashue said he plans to seek re-election in a byelection.

No date has been set for that vote.
