The government of Newfoundland and Labrador says it will issue a request for proposals within the next few weeks to hire a consultant to review its electricity system.
The review will examine power generation, transmission and distribution, as well as regulations, legislation and trends in the North American electricity sector.
Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley says the review is intended to complement and not duplicate an ongoing review by the province's Public Utilities Board.
The board's review is looking at how the province's energy system failed following power outages in January across Newfoundland that at one point left 190,000 customers in the dark.
The board has said it expects to deliver an interim report on its findings by mid-May.
