Nova Scotia premier-designate Stephen McNeil has appointed his chief of staff.

Kirby McVicar has been the chief of staff for the Liberal caucus office since 2011.

McNeil says McVicar has played a major role in moving the party from the official Opposition into government.

McVicar was previously director of national operations at Eastlink Cable Systems and is a long-time party volunteer.

The Liberals won 33 of the 51 seats in the legislature after last week's election.

The Progressive Conservatives won 11 and the NDP held on to seven seats.
