Ontario's governing Liberals are considering legislation that would deduct demerit points from motorists who make phone calls or text while driving.

A spokesman for Transportation Minister Glen Murray confirmed that the government is considering changes to penalties for distracted driving.

He says they're also looking at penalties for "dooring" — when cyclists collide with a vehicle door that's suddenly opened.

He says there are no plans currently to introduce the changes, contrary to media reports.

But Murray says he personally supports tougher penalties for distracted drivers.

Ontario prohibits drivers from using cellphones while driving and its top court says it's illegal to even hold a phone while driving.
