Taking care of their own

Globe and Mail Blog Post

All politics is local and, according to the Liberals, much of recent Tory infrastructure spending is too.

Liberal infrastructure critic Gerard Kennedy alleged today that the Harper Conservatives have focused project-specific public works spending on their own ridings over the past two years.

He said statistics show more than three quarters of the first billion dollars of project-specific announcements flowing from the Building Canada Fund since 2007 was directed to Conservative-held constituencies.

Of specific infrastructure projects announced across Canada in 2007 and 2008, Mr. Kennedy said, 77.8 per cent of them were in Conservative ridings. By comparison, the Conservatives represent only hold about 46 per cent of federal ridings.

"They made sure they took care of their own political backyards first," Mr. Kennedy said.
