Elsie Wayne suffers stroke

Elsie Wayne, one of the most colourful characters to sit in the House of Commons, is in a Saint John hospital recovering from a stroke.

The former Progressive Conservative MP is currently experiencing partial paralysis with some improvement, according to Brian Mosher, a New Brunswick lawyer who has campaigned with Ms. Wayne.

“She’s still on quite a few committees and still appears at various functions and things up until very recently when she started having these problems,” said Mr. Mosher. “She was staying fairly active.”

Ms. Wayne, 77, was first elected in 1993 as one of only two Progressive Conservative MPs, along with Jean Charest. She retired in 2004 after joining the newly-created Conservative Party of Canada.

In politics, Ms. Wayne was as a social conservative who spoke out in opposition to same sex marriage.
