Flaherty ducks out of G7 talks to visit igloo

Iqaluit— Globe and Mail Update

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty took an impromptu Saturday-morning break from his meeting with G7 finance ministers and central bankers to visit an igloo set up outside as part of a display of Inuit culture.

A group of about two dozen Inuit clad in seal-skin coats were gathered outside by the igloo. Some of the children were playing road hockey.

The days of Inuit people living in igloos are long gone, but they are still used by hunters as shelter when they go out hunting on the land.

Shortly after his visit to the display, Mr. Flaherty went back inside to pose for the G7 "family photo."

He is photographed with his hands over his knees, to cover the fact that his pants were still wet from crawling in the igloo.
