Harper decries vandalism of Liberal signs

OTTAWA— Globe and Mail Blog

Stephen Harper is decrying the vandalism of Liberal campaign signs, saying his party can’t be responsible because the Conservative team is too busy rolling out its own advertising.

Ottawa-area Liberal candidate Ryan Keon has found his campaign signs spray-painted with a black crosshairs and is facing a bill of nearly $2,000 to replace them.

Mr. Harper said this crosses the line.

“Defacing of other candidates’ signs is never acceptable for any campaign,” Mr. Harper said following a campaign stop in the Ottawa area.

“Our campaign does not have the time to do that. We’ve got enough to do to get our own signs up, as we got lots of demand for signs right across the country."

About 100 of the 400 to 500 big signs placed at intersections have been damaged by the same vandalism.

In some cases, the Ottawa Citizen reported, the signs were also marred by expletives or phrases such as “tree hugger” and “ad scam,” a reference to a scandal in a previous Liberal government.
