Jack Layton's 'immediate future' in doubt

Jack Layton’s future is suddenly up in the air.

The NDP Leader will make an announcement at 2 p.m. ET in Toronto “about his personal status and his immediate future as NDP Leader,” according a press release from the party.

There have been reports that Mr. Layton injured his back recently, but it is unclear whether that has any bearing on his announcement.

Mr. Layton celebrated his seventh anniversary as leader of the NDP on Jan. 25. There has been no indication before now that he was contemplating stepping down as leader.

According to one wire report, a party official denies that Mr. Layton is planning to step down.

Mr. Layton, 60, had to cancel a weekend engagement with NDP members because of back problems.

Rumours that he might be interested in running for mayor of Toronto are being strongly denied.
