Michaëlle Jean shares Madonna's taste in shoes

It was all about the shoes. Those lovely black and white shoes were the focus of Governor-General Michaëlle Jean’s all-Canadian outfit this afternoon as she read a very lengthy Speech from the Throne.

The shoes are by John Fluevog from Vancouver – very fashion-forward and cobbler to the stars. Madonna, for example, wore a pair of hot pink platform Fluevog’s in her movie, Truth or Dare.

You couldn’t miss them as the Governor-General crossed and uncrossed her ankles during the marathon 6,000-word speech.

Her white blouse – with the small diamante detail at the neck – is by W10 of Toronto. Located in Yorkville, it does custom made apparel, designed not only to fit your body proportion but to also fit with your skin undertones, according to its website.

And the suit? The black suit was by Michel Desjardins of Montreal. He is a well-known Quebec designer who once studied to be an architect. He is also schooled in haute couture.

Ms. Jean’s predecessor Adrienne Clarkson also strove to wear Canadian designers when she ventured out in public. But the Governor-General’s shoes today provided a real statement. They were daring, interesting and sophisticated all at the same time.
