Ottawa celebrates country and royals

OTTAWA— Globe and Mail Update

After waiting for hours in the sun, Canadians were rewarded as Prince William and Catherine arrived by state landau on Parliament Hill.

Amid the crush of the crowds on and surrounding the Hill, there were reports of people fainting and medics having a difficult time reaching them.

Catherine was dressed in red and white, including a fascinator featuring maple leafs. This, to help celebrate Canada's 144th birthday.

William was in a light-weight blue suit.

The royal couple were accompanied by Governor General David Johnston and his wife, Sharon. Mrs. Johnston was also sporting red and white.

But Laureen Harper, the Prime Minister's wife, who had arrived earlier by motorcade with her family, chose a dove-grey outfit for the occasion.

The couple had come from a citizenship ceremony at The Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que.

The royal couple did not stop to greet the crowd as they walked up the red carpet to the royal box on stage.

That didn't stop the crowds from chanting “Will and Kate,” “Will and Kate.”

The performances began immediately before the singing of God Save the Queen and O Canada.

Prince William and Catherine do not sing O Canada.

The two chatted quite a bit to each other during and between the performances.

Heritage Minister James Moore, who is in the box with them, gave the couple a standing ovation when they were introduced.
