Peter Milliken makes history

The House of Commons Speaker will decide today who has supreme authority in Canada: Parliament or the government.

Peter Milliken is scheduled to rule after Question Period around 3 p.m. ET, delivering a 45-minute address on whether the government should be compelled to release uncensored documents pertaining to the treatment of detainees transferred by Canadian forces to Afghan prisons.

Arguing the Conservatives were holding back information to avoid embarrassing revelations, opposition parties passed a motion demanding the government release all documents. Arguing redacted files were a matter of national security, the government refused.
