Back in 2000, when Industry Minister John Manley broached financial support to NHL franchises in danger of moving to the U.S., the NDP was staunchly opposed.
In 2003, when Jack Layton ran for the NDP leadership, his convention speech bashed Manley as someone who “will pick up a phone to call a bank president to save an NHL team, but not pick up the phone to help a student with her student loan.”
So let me get this straight…
When Canada's sport is moving south, Layton is opposed to financial support.
When billionaires decide to no longer pay millionaires to drive Ferraris through Montreal, Layton supports financial support.
That will sell well in Winnipeg.
