John Manley: "… I truly found that in my mind and heart, I have moved on from the world of elected office," wrote Mr. Manley. "I also found that I lacked the burning ambition necessary to mount and sustain such a campaign." And: "So, for a few days, I have 'tried on' my old uniform and made an effort to think again as an active, partisan combatant in the political wars," he wrote. "I love my country and am loyal to my party. I care deeply about public policy and I honour public service as the highest calling. ... I hope that there will arise other opportunities for me to serve in the future. But these are unlikely to be in the holding of elected office."
