Conservative Leader Stephen Harper gestures while talking with children after casting his ballot at a polling station in a school in Calgary, Alberta May 2, 2011.

A look at reaction to Stephen Harper's majority win, the NDP's surge and the Bloc's stunning defeat.

From commenter professor_x: The Liberals are probably going to have to consider a merger with the NDP - thereby defining the new right/left dynamic in Canadian politics and a move towards a traditional two-party system.

From commenter RichAlbertan: Everyone agrees this is a great country. But everything you see around you that makes this a great country happened under progressive small "l" liberal stewardship.

From commenter dannymanning: The NDP's honeymoon could be short-lived. The party's surge is essentially a Quebec-Toronto rump, two divergent forces.

From commenter M Alta: Thank You Canada, at least 4 years of stability

From @DaveGAbbey via Twitter: Hope women get a higher percentage of MPs elected. NDP strengths should increase number of women MPs in new Parliament.

From commenter Citizen 1: I'm not a big fan of Ignatieff, but he would have made a capable leader.

From commenter nowar: Democracy is messy and the results are not always good for the country (think the US 2000 election!).

From commenter Sean Mattingly: In the end democracy is the winner and the more who participate the healthier our democracy will be. All national leaders have given their best and deserve our appreciation for making a strong case for our support. In the end we will choose and as always, we will be right.

From commenter Shediac: With 60% of Canadians wanting no part of the extreme Harper politics, Harper gets to rule. This is democracy?

From commenter ?Impact: The best news here is Stephen Harper has no more excuse for his failures, if his trend of fiscal incompetence continues then the Conservatives are toast next time.

Comment From Jonathon via liveblog: Let's hope Canada re-establishes itself as a shining example of what democracy - and a nation - can accomplish!

Comment From Jason Knight via liveblog: I hope a coalition is formed. That will force electoral changes!

Comment From Ian W via liveblog: Being a Permanent Resident I am Not legally allowed to vote, but I managed to persuade My Wife, and for the first time in her life she did..

Comment From bill via liveblog: I'm in South carolina on vacation . I need to know if the NDP is elected ; in that case I'll stay here!!

Comment From Horatio via liveblog: A steady stream of people at our East Oakville polling station. Many of the polls were staffed by young people and the gentleman in front of us had his teenage daughter with him. She actually went back to the polling booth to watch him vote. It's very heartening to see this engagement from the young voters and future voters!

Comment From Liz Pead via liveblog: comment for Dave Lee - there was incredible turnout at the polls. at both the polls and the door, people were genuinely excited to be voting, they felt real change was happening in our government.
