N.S. man gets house arrest for EBay fraud

BRIDGEWATER, N.S.— The Canadian Press

A Nova Scotia man has been sentenced to five months of house arrest and has to pay back money he bilked from a man over the Internet.

Richard Allan Mansfield, 18, of Liverpool pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of fraud through an EBay transaction.

A count of mail fraud was withdrawn.

Mr. Mansfield was charged in August following a complaint from a Maine resident who paid $4,100 (U.S.) for coins that turned out to be worthless.

Because of the cross-border nature of the crime, a special prosecutor was brought in from Halifax to handle the case.

The RCMP calls the verdict a big step in fighting online crimes.
