RCMP investigate B.C. government computer breach

VICTORIA — Canadian Press

The RCMP has been brought in after a breach of the B.C. government's computer system last month.

Labour Minister Mike de Jong is trying to downplay the significance of the hacker attack, which appears to have been launched from the Netherlands.

He says it was an attempt to make use of the government network, but he refused to give any more details.

De Jong revealed the police involvement after the NDP raised the issue during question period.

He says it was not a case of personal privacy being compromised, but it was serious enough that officials notified the Mounties.

In fact, documents provided by de Jong's staff reveal that 78 B.C. government computers were heavily compromised and needed their hard drives erased.
