Vancouver-based CounterPath Solutions Inc., a provider of voice and video over Internet protocol applications and softphones, has launched X-Lite 3.0, its new free softphone. X-Lite 3.0 is based on eyeBeam 1.5, CounterPath's carrier-grade commercial Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) softphone, and offers automatic configuration, audio and video, presence and instant messaging, and a comprehensive address book.
SIP is a telephone protocol used mainly for voice over VoIP calls, but can also be used for video, multiplayer games or instant messaging.
Covergence, a provider of scaling, securing and controlling VoIP services, has certified eyeBeam 1.5 Video for use with Eclipse, a SIP security system, protecting users from unauthorized access to the user's call and protects the service provider from attacks intended to disrupt or disable their service.
X-Lite 3.0 replaces the previous version, launched in 2003, and can now be downloaded from CounterPath's website for free as part of CounterPath's strategy to accelerate mainstream adoption of VoIP.
The product is designed to be used as a platform for innovation by enabling users to test, evaluate and provide feedback on new features and applications to be launched in the future. The company says it launch a developer's program in the next few months.
X-Lite 3.0 can be downloaded free www.counterpath.com. It is currently available on Windows, with Mac and Linux versions launching later this year.
CounterPath was earlier known as Xten Networks, Inc.
