The dot-ca Internet domain registry has passed the half-million mark, according to figures released Tuesday by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).
When it assumed responsibility for the dot-ca registry in December 2000, there were 60,000 names registered, CIRA said. In 2004, the number of dot-ca domain names registered rose 24 per cent to 482,684, up from 389,216 in 2003. In contrast, the number of dot-com domain names registered by Canadians rose 10 per cent to 1,144,801 in 2004, up from 1,043,043 in 2003.
To register a dot-ca domain name, an organization or individual must be able
to demonstrate that it meets CIRA's Canadian presence criteria.
Since January 1, 2005 some 17,316 new dot-ca domain names have been registered, representing an average of about 275 new registrations per day.
