Research In Motion Ltd. RIM-T has bought up Canadian software developer Viigo, according to a post on the website of the Toronto-based tech firm.
Late Friday afternoon, Viigo issued a release announcing the deal, though RIM hasn't disclosed the terms of the transaction or even announced it.
Viigo has created a popular RSS reader that delivers mobile content to smart phones. These vary from news to politics or weather, and other updates.
“Our team has joined RIM's global organization and will continue to bring our expertise in BlackBerry application development and real-time content delivery to the BlackBerry platform,” Viigo chief executive officer Mark Ruddock said in a release.
RIM obviously viewed the Viigo, which had expanded into the enterprise solutions market, as a strategic enough investment to buy it outright and integrate it, as opposed to simply offering it in the BlackBerry app store, Genuity Capital Markets technology analyst Deepak Chopra told The Globe and Mail.
Viigo had previously been a recipient of some money from the BlackBerry Partners Fund, a fund that helps develop applications for the smart phone.
