A new study shows Ontario's bald eagle and peregrine falcon populations are soaring while swallows are becoming more scarce.
The new Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario finds the Canada goose and wild turkey are also thriving.
Mike Cadman, who oversaw the atlas, says these species have recovered well because of pesticide bans and aggressive conservation.
But Caroline Shultz, with Ontario Nature, says intensive agriculture is hurting some species like the northern bobwhite and the bobolink.
She says the biggest declines found in southern Ontario — up to 50 per cent in the last few decades — are among formerly common birds such as the swallow, nighthawk and whip-poo.
The group is calling for intense conservation efforts to protect the birds that are on the decline.
