    From a frigid grave

    An international team of archeologists has discovered a perfectly preserved steamboat from the Klondike gold rush lying in the freezing waters of Lake Laberge, in the subarctic wilderness of the Yukon. Their images of the sternwheeler A.J. Goddard are the first views of the frontier steamer since it disappeared in a winter storm on the lake in October of 1901.

  • How it’s made: Purists say that grapes for proper icewine must be harvested below -8 degrees and pressed without exceeding that temperature. Pressing while cold drives the water out as shards of ice, leaving highly concentrated juice. Producers in less reliably cold countries freeze grapes after picking, a process Canadian vintners are not allowed to use and disparage as akin to cooking a turkey in a microwave.
