The tank man

The circled area shows where the unidentified protester who came to be known as the "tank man" made his stand against Chinese troops. On June 5, 1989 - the day after the massacre - the man stepped out in front of a column of tanks. Instead of running him over, the tanks tried to avoid him. The man was eventually pulled away by onlookers and disappeared.
