A wrench was thrown in Mr. Smitherman's campaign late Friday evening with the departure of campaign manager Jeff Bangs. Speculation swirled over the weekend regarding the reasons behind his departure, with some saying Mr. Bangs, the father of two young children, may have underestimated the notoriously tenacious Mr. Smitherman's "24/7" schedule.

Mr. Davis said he's prepared for that blistering pace, balanced with his responsibilities as chair of a board gearing up to make dramatic changes to its properties across the city.
