The Gardiner Expressway’s westbound lanes were shut down near Royal York Road early this morning after unusual crash, but reopened at 10 a.m. Friday, CP24 reported.
According to CP24, a Chevrolet Avalanche crashed into the base of an overhead sign, bringing down the whole structure and blocking all three lanes of the highway. The accident occurred at about 5 a.m. and the driver was taken into custody shortly after.
In a remarkable development, local news reports say a honeymooning couple from Italy were caught up in the incident when their rental car struck the toppled sign. Police told CP24 that the newlyweds were uninjured, and were transported to Pearson International Airport by Toronto firefighters so that they wouldn’t miss their flight home.
