A preliminary hearing will begin next January 30 for a man accused of killing a York University student.

Brian Dickson, 29, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Qian Liu, a 23-year-old student from China.

Mr. Dickson made a brief court appearance via video link this morning, and his next appearance is set for Oct. 26.

His lawyer, Robert Nuttall, said outside court that two weeks have been set aside for the preliminary hearing, but that could be extended to three weeks.

Ms. Liu's partially clad body was discovered in her basement apartment in April.

Police haven't released the cause of death.

Ms. Liu had been talking on her webcam with her boyfriend in China when there was a knock on her door. A man entered her apartment and a struggle ensued while Liu's boyfriend witnessed a part of the attack before the webcam was turned off.
