A man police allege was behind the wheel of a Toronto garbage truck that fatally collided with a five-year-old girl has been charged with careless driving.

Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was struck and killed by the garbage truck while walking home from school on March 7 in the city’s east end, near East Haven Drive and Cliffside Drive.

Police have said two other schoolchildren were also injured in the collision.

Investigators later returned to the scene along with the garbage truck to better figure out how the collision occurred.

Police on Thursday announced that a 64-year-old man has been charged with careless driving and not turning in safety in connection with Kayleigh’s death.

His name has not been released and he is due in court June 6.
