A man has been shot dead near a café in Vaughan, according to York Regional Police.

Constable Andy Pattenden said police received calls shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday about gunshots on Regina Road near Highway 7 and Martin Grove Road. When police arrived, they found an adult man dead in the café's parking lot.

Constable Pattenden said police are unable to confirm the man's identity or age at this time.

An employee at a nearby business, who asked his name or the name of his business not be published, said he didn't hear the gunshots. He said he went outside after a co-worker on a lunch break called him to ask what had happened.

"I walk over and I see a couple guys standing by a car. I was like 'What happened here,' and they said, 'Look over there,' " he said. "Just a body lying on the ground."

The employee said he was told the café had just reopened on Monday under new owners after about two months of renovations. He said he has never seen the new owners of the café, and wasn't aware of its new name.
