Vakhtang Makhniashvili, who was arrested after a stabbing incident in his apartment building on the weekend, has been released on bail.
On Monday, the father of missing teenager Mariam Makhniashvili appeared in a Toronto court after his neighbour was stabbed in the stomach Friday evening.
A noise complaint is believed to have sparked the incident, which sent the 26-year-old male to hospital for treatment.
Reports say Mr. Makhniashvili appeared at the hearing donning an orange jumpsuit, his left hand wrapped in bandages. His wife, Lela Tabidze was also present.
The judge placed a publication ban on the details of his bail conditions.
According to the Toronto Sun, the Crown wants a psychiatric assessment for Mr. Makhniashvili because of the stress he’s endured since his daughter disappeared.
Mariam vanished Sept. 14 and was last seen at her high school in the Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue area. International agencies have helped Toronto police in their hunt for the 18-year-old who immigrated to Canada from the Republic of Georgia.
The best clue police have is her backpack, discovered in an area parking lot on Oct. 8. The RCMP in Alberta received numerous reports of sightings there, none of which has proved fruitful.
