A wounded man who walked into a Scarborough hospital Sunday claiming to be the victim of a drive-by shooting swiftly found that his troubles were not over.
Police were skeptical and concluded that the tale told by Kevin Gilhooley, 43, had been invented and that in fact he had shot himself.
Detectives with a search warrant then visited Mr. Gilhooley's home, where they allegedly found a mini-arsenal of weapons – two handguns, a shotgun and a pellet rifle – together with ammunition and a quantity of cannabis.
Eleven criminal charges were laid, ranging from firearms offences to mischief to possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.
Mr. Gilhooley had accidentally shot himself in the thigh, shattering the bone, said Sgt. Mike Stones of 42 Division – exactly how remains unclear – but is expected to recover.
"He's being as co-operative as he can be for someone who shot himself in the leg and got caught with a bunch of unregistered guns and marijuana," Sgt. Stones said.
"It's pretty self-explanatory. There's some silly people out there, with guns they're not supposed to have, doing silly things to themselves, and trying to blame everybody else."
