City councillors in Mississauga have passed a bylaw banning the possession and sale of shark fin products in the city on the eve of a similar discussion among Toronto councillors.
The bylaw, passed Wednesday, prohibits possession, sale, trade or distribution of shark fins or derivative products.
The consumption of shark fins has pushed many of the world's shark species to the brink of extinction.
The fins are often used for shark fin soup, considered a delicacy and status symbol by many in the Chinese community.
Oakville introduced a ban in July.
Toronto's licensing and standards committee will debate Thursday whether to institute a similar ban on shark fins.
