The main highway leading to Toronto's Pearson International Airport has been shut down by a truck accident that will affect two of Toronto's busiest roadways well into the afternoon.
A single vehicle transport truck lost control and rolled over on top of Eglinton Avenue, striking the left side of highway guard rail and spilling a load of gravel from its back in the process, said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
The Hwy 427 northbound ramp to Hwy 401 westbound will be closed to all traffic until 5 p.m. while cleanup and maintenance crews clear the gravel and remove the truck, which is now hanging precariously over the edge of the overpass, said Sgt. Schmidt.
"There was a lot of debris and oil dripping down from the overpass down onto the road below," he said.
The Eglinton ramp is also closed in both directions, and traffic is being forced off the 401 eastbound.
"The highway is very congested and if people are coming up the 427 northbound, it would probably be a good idea to get off early," Sgt. Schmidt said.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital as a precaution, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Dean Wright, the general manager of the Toronto Airport Express shuttle service, said the closure is causing some delays back and forth between downtown, but the bus drivers are well versed in alternate routes to Pearson.
"They'll get around the issue," he said. "It will slow us down a little bit until the problem's cleaned up but we don't expect anything major."
Mr. Wright said he hasn't heard any customer complaints or concerns.
"As far as I know everybody's making it to their flights on time.
The OPP are investigating the cause of the accident.
