A Cessna 172 in flight.

A 26-year-old man is facing a charge of dangerous operation of an aircraft after a stunt flying incident over Richmond Hill.

York Regional Police says they received numerous calls late Sunday afternoon about an aircraft flying erratically over residential neighbourhoods and parks.

Out of concern that the aircraft was having mechanical problems, officers cleared and closed down roads to provide the pilot with a place to attempt an emergency landing.

The plane was tracked to a safe landing at Markham Airport where officers allege the pilot said he'd decided to take the rented plane out and stunt-fly over a friend's house.
