A bullet-riddled black Lexus found on Lake Shore Boulevard with blood and no occupants sparked a search for its passengers and another vehicle on Tuesday, closing the popular commuter route in both directions for several hours.

Police say it is unclear whether an occupant of the Lexus whom they questioned was driving.

The man had fled the road near British Columbia Drive when shots rang out at about 4:35 a.m., but returned two hours later, according to Toronto police Constable Tony Vella. Police said the man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they are unsure how many people were in the Lexus when it was hit by bullets and how many others could be injured.

The second vehicle, which was driven away after the shots were fired, is grey or white, Constable Vella said.

Blood was found in the Lexus, but police aren't saying where or if a trail was left. The car had "several" bullet holes, but police wouldn't say how many.

Witnesses to the confrontation, between 4:30 a.m. and 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, are being asked to come forward.

Lake Shore Boulevard, from British Columbia Drive to Jameson Avenue, was closed for more than 10 hours.

A vehicle found near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West does not appear to be involved, Constable Vella said.
