A man is under arrest after two schools and a daycare were locked down as a precaution after police received a gun-related call in Toronto's northwest end on Friday.

"It was reported to us initially that he had a gun, then later on someone said that it might have just been a lighter that looked like a gun. But obviously we have to treat it as if it is a gun and then work our way back down from there," said Constable Victor Kwong, a spokesman for Toronto Police.

Officers got a call around 8 a.m. about a person with a gun at an apartment building on York Gate Boulevard near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West.

The building has a ground-floor daycare, which was put into lockdown. Two nearby schools, St. Charles Garnier Catholic Elementary School and Gosford Public School, were put in hold-and-secure position. The schools and the daycare re-opened on Friday morning after the lockdown was lifted.

Officers with the Emergency Task Force found the man in an apartment and spoke to him before taking him into custody around 9:45 a.m., Constable Kwong said.
