The province's police watchdog has been called in after a man was shot in the upper torso in northwest Toronto.

Paramedics say the man was rushed to hospital in serious condition after the shooting Monday afternoon at a highrise apartment (at 2677 Kipling Avenue near Finch Avenue).

They say he is expected to survive.

The Special Investigations Unit says police were at the apartment building to keep the peace for someone who was retrieving their belongings.

It says an "interaction" between the man and police occurred, resulting in him being shot.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
