A lengthy standoff in Whitby, Ont., that began early Tuesday following an alleged attempted kidnapping has ended peacefully.

Durham Region police say a man from nearby Oshawa surrendered and was taken into custody at about 5 a.m., more than 24 hours after the standoff began in an auto repair shop.

Police have not yet released the man’s name, but several media reports have identified him as former Oshawa city councillor Robert Lutczyk.

On Monday, someone allegedly tried to kidnap Oshawa city solicitor David Potts following a council meeting.

Oshawa Mayor John Henry said Mr. Potts managed to escaped unharmed and return home.

Mr. Henry and police have said they believe the two incidents are related.
