A student was stabbed at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Brampton, Ont., on Friday afternoon, a school board official said.

The student was stabbed around 12:30 p.m. and the school was locked down for a short time, said Bruce Campbell, the general manager of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance shortly after police arrived, according to Sergeant David Kennedy, a communications officer with Peel Regional Police. Police said they were not releasing details about the extent of the student's injuries.

"We do have an individual in custody," Sgt. Kennedy said, adding that police do not know the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Students left the school under what Mr. Campbell described as a "controlled release." About 1,800 students attend the school.

Nearby St. Aidan Catholic Elementary School was in "hold and secure" during the occurrence. It has since been lifted.
