A man is in custody and three people are being treated for serious injuries after a stabbing attack near Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto.

Toronto Paramedic Services says a woman and a man in their twenties were stabbed in the torso, while a man in his forties was stabbed in the back.

All three were taken to a trauma centre for treatment.

Toronto police say that a fourth victim, a woman, was attacked but was not stabbed.

Police say they are unclear on the motive of the attack and believe it may have been random.

An unidentified man in his fifties has been taken into custody.
