Toronto police are warning of a man impersonating a police officer.

Police say that at about 12:45 a.m., a man identified himself as an officer and asked to come inside a home near Yonge Street and Highway 401.

The man said he was doing an investigation, and the homeowner said he appeared to have a silver handgun in his belt.

When the homeowner asked for police identification, the man refused and left the area.

The man in his 30s is described as white, clean shaven, about 5-foot-10 to six feet tall with a medium, muscular build and dirty blond hair in a brush cut.

Police say anyone with a concern about a police officer has the right to ask for the officer's identification.
