It was twenty minutes before midnight when Casey Laforet realized his first-born child stood a good chance of becoming Toronto's New Year's baby.

He and his wife, Jane Maggs, 30, were at St. Michael's Hospital, three days overdue. As the clock ticked down, excitement built among the assembled medical staff.

"The nurses in the room counted down to midnight, and he was born right after," Mr. Laforet, 36, recalled with a chuckle. Then, they celebrated with a little de-alcoholized champagne.

The boy, Wynn Christopher Laforet, arrived healthy, weighing seven pounds, four ounces. His time of birth was recorded as exactly 12:00 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2013.

Mr. Laforet, who plays in alt. country band Elliott Brood and Ms. Maggs, a screenwriter, planned to rest up and take Wynn back to their High Park home Wednesday, where friends and family are eager to meet him.

As to Wynn's uniqe distinction, Mr. Laforet said simply: "It's been really cool."
